PROS AND CONS OF THE BOLOGNESE (BOLOGNESE DOG BREED)
Is the Bolognese the right dog for you – honestly, without sugarcoating
A tiny body.
A huge heart.
A quiet presence that fills a room without making noise.
He does not demand attention.
He simply becomes it.
If you are looking for a dog that will just sit on your lap and stay silent – keep scrolling.
If you are looking for a small dog with a massive heart – read carefully.
I have lived with Bolognese dogs for a long time. Too long to tell fairy tales. So I will tell you the truth – the beautiful parts and the challenging ones.
PROS OF THE BOLOGNESE BREED
Small apartment? Not a problem.
A Bolognese does not need a mansion with a yard.
He needs you.
He adapts perfectly to apartment living. He will not “bounce off the walls” because of limited space. His need for closeness is far greater than his need for square footage.
Social. Extremely social.
This is a dog that does not know how to dislike.
People. Children. Other dogs. Cats.
He walks into a room as if saying:
“Here I am. Who can I make happy today?”
He is not a one-person dog who ignores everyone else. He wants to be part of everything. Always.
Gets along with cats
Yes, you read that right.
“Natural enemies”? Not in his world.
If you already have a cat, chances are they will quickly become a peaceful duo. Shared naps. Shared space. Quiet harmony.
Of course, proper introductions are essential. Nothing should be left to chance.
Does not need marathons
Lively? Yes.
Playful? Absolutely.
Hyperactive? No.
A bit of indoor play and one good daily walk are usually enough.
If you are active, he will follow you.
If you are not, he will adjust.
Adaptability is one of his greatest strengths.
Does not shed
For many people, this is the deciding factor.
The Bolognese sheds very little. With regular brushing, you will not find hair all over your furniture.
But do not be misled.
The loose hair gets trapped within the coat. Without consistent brushing, mats will form, especially around the paws and behind the ears.
His coat is considered hypoallergenic, which makes him a better option for allergy-sensitive individuals, but I always recommend spending time with the breed before making a final decision.
Small dog. Easy logistics.
Travel plans?
Plane? Train? Public transportation?
He fits in a carrier, and you are ready to go.
He does not take up space. He does not create drama. With proper socialization, he behaves gracefully wherever you take him.
Intelligent. Very much so.
Do not underestimate him because of his size.
The Bolognese is highly intelligent. He learns quickly and understands even faster.
Commands. Tricks. Household routines. He masters them without unnecessary stress.
He is known as a therapy dog.
And on top of that?
A perfect little alarm system.
You will know someone is approaching before they ring the doorbell.
Loves children. Truly.
Not “tolerates.”
Not “puts up with.”
Loves.
He has patience. Gentleness. A natural protective instinct.
Children who grow up with a Bolognese learn responsibility, empathy, and care for others.
Of course, adult supervision is always necessary. That applies to every breed.
CONS OF THE BOLOGNESE BREED
Yes. They exist.
And you need to know them.
Struggles with being alone
This is the biggest drawback.
The Bolognese bonds deeply with his family. Sometimes too deeply.
If you plan to leave him alone all day, think again.
Three to four hours is the maximum most of them tolerate without developing issues. Otherwise, separation anxiety, excessive barking, or destructive behavior may appear.
A small tip?
Leave something with your scent. It helps, but it is not a long-term solution.
Easy to spoil
And this is the trap.
He looks at you with those dark eyes.
Tilts his head slightly.
And you give in.
If you do not set boundaries from day one, he will set them for you.
This is a dog that gives unconditional love.
But he needs structure. Consistency. Guidance.
Requires regular grooming
That white, dense, soft coat is not maintenance-free.
Regular brushing is mandatory.
Haircuts are optional if you have the time to maintain the coat properly, but many owners find trimming easier.
If you do not have time for grooming, this is not the right breed for you.
So, is the Bolognese right for you?
The Bolognese has far more strengths than weaknesses.
But only if you give him what he needs most – presence, closeness, and consistency.
He is not a backyard dog.
Not a “when I have time” dog.
Not a dog to be ignored.
He is a small dog with an enormous heart.
If you want a white little companion who will walk through life with you, you may have just found your breed.
If you have more questions about the Bolognese, feel free to reach out.
It is always better to ask now than to regret later.
